The first litter pick of the year was held in Colindale this weekend and Matthew demonstrated his commitment to keeping the Hendon constituency clean and tidy by attending.

The monthly event is held on the third Saturday of the month and is organised by local volunteers the Colindale Litterpickers. The team was accompanied by Wayne Dixon and Koda. Wayne is a military veteran and Tidy Britain Ambassador who is walking the length of the British coastline to raise awareness for mental health charities, Northern Inuit dogs and plastic pollution in the seas. Having walked 220 miles of the South West Coast Path himself, Matthew is aware of the challenge it is to walk such a long distance and the impact litter has upon the sea.

Colindale’s litter pick comes in the same week that the Tidy Britain Group launched the Great British Spring Clean in the House of Commons. Scheduled to take place in the week 20th March to 3rd April 2020. Last year, more than 560,000 people took part and the plan is to get over 600,000 people to take part. Anyone can pledge to pick and can do so while walking the dog, taking the kids to school, or by hosting a clean-up or joining someone else’s event.

Matthew said “We should all take the responsibility of disposing of our rubbish properly and not drop it on the ground. It is not only unsightly but can easily find its way into the North Sea by flowing through the Silk Stream into the River Brent and then the River Thames. Litter scars our coastal landscape and it is a direct consequence of people dropping litter in place like the Hendon constituency.

As Parliament has now dissolved, I want to say that it has been the honour of my life to serve as your Member of Parliament for the last 14 years. I thank my constituents in Hendon for electing me on four occasions.
