Matthew attended a poignant Remembrance service in Hendon as the country remembers the sacrifice and service of members of the Armed Forces.

During the annual service, Matthew joined the Mayor, local councillors, representatives from the police, and community groups including the Scouts, Brownies and Cubs in laying wreaths at the Hendon War Memorial.

Matthew has laid a wreath in Hendon for 21 years, aside from during the pandemic and on the occasion when he attended the service in Edgware, when wreath were laid on his behalf.

Following the service, Matthew said "Given what I have seen in the last week in Israel, I felt it was appropriate to invoke the poem by Wilfred Owen on my wreath. Dulce et Decorum est is a Latin phrase that translates into "It is sweet and fitting to die for one's country" but the poem portrays the way of death in a war zone as deeply upsetting and unpleasant. That has been my experience."

Matthew also commented on the fact that the service may be his last as an elected representative, saying: "I am grateful for all the people who stopped me at the service and expressed their thanks for the 22 years I will have served the people of Hendon by the next election. I am proud to have attended the service for two decades, as a local councillor, Deputy Leader of the council and now Member of Parliament.

"Of all of my duties as a local Member of Parliament, this is a service I value greatly and is a good reminder that the decisions politicians make have an impact in the world. This continues to this day with conflicts continuing overseas."

As Parliament has now dissolved, I want to say that it has been the honour of my life to serve as your Member of Parliament for the last 14 years. I thank my constituents in Hendon for electing me on four occasions.
