Matthew intervenes again over failure to repair A1 footbridge

Matthew has once again intervened on an issue that involves his constituents and Transport for London (TfL). The footbridge spanning the A1 between Sunny Gardens Road and Copthall was damaged on 15th February by a lorry with a high load. Following representations from a constituent, Matthew raised the issue with TfL and was assured that the bridge would be repaired.

However, six months later the bridge is still closed off, preventing residents, children, and Saracens' fans from gaining direct access to the park. Instead, pedestrians must walk to the subway under the A1 at Five Ways Corner or go up to the junction with Parson Street and risk crossing at the traffic lights.

Matthew has written to TfL again to ask when the repairs will be made as the damaged section was removed in May and should have been replaced by now.

Matthew said: "This is an unacceptable situation. Not only have I intervened once before, I'm having to do so a second time. Transport for London is the responsibility of the Mayor of London, Saddiq Khan. Hendon has a Labour GLA member who should be monitoring this work but once again - just like the roadworks and congestion at Apex Corner - nothing has happened.

"This isn't a political issue but simply a failure to undertake the job. As a Member of Parliament, this is not my role but, unlike other elected representatives, I do it to ensure that my constituents are not inconvenienced by such problems."

As Parliament has now dissolved, I want to say that it has been the honour of my life to serve as your Member of Parliament for the last 14 years. I thank my constituents in Hendon for electing me on four occasions.
